Galerie de Bab Rouah review: our verdict
You step through a city gate to see art. Bab Rouah, the Almohad gate from the 12th century that pierces the ramparts of Rabat, houses an art gallery beneath its brick vaults. The white display cases slip between the arches, and the architecture lends a depth to the canvases and installations that no new room could offer.
Exhibitions change every two to three weeks: Moroccan painters, retrospectives, sculptures, and installations. It's a stop for the passing art lover on Avenue de la Victoire, or a short cultural outing on a Saturday in town. It's not a museum where you spend the afternoon: the gallery is small, you make the round quickly, and the interest of the visit depends on the current exhibition.
The best slot: Tuesday to Saturday, from 10 am to 6 pm; the gallery closes on Sunday and Monday. The good tip: watch for the Night of Museums, the gallery has already opened free in the evening.
