La Perle blanche de l'océan review: our verdict
The chef hails from Essaouira, and it's evident in the frying: a delicate batter that lets the sole, merlin, squid, and shrimp shine. The menu is short, which suits the freshness perfectly: grilled or fried fish, plates of squid and shrimp with parsley, gazpacho as a starter, and fish and chips for those in a hurry.
Located on rue Fatima Zohra, the room fits only a few tables, and every inch speaks of the sea: a fish fresco in zellige, a suspended boat, a buoy, anchors, even the ashtrays. The owner serves personally, with a kindness that becomes part of the meal. This is the spot for a lunch break in the medina, for two or a small group, when you're tired of tajines; not for a large gathering or a festive dinner.
The dish to order: the sole and merlin fry, the chef's signature. The good tip: reasonable prices for the medina. Note: closed on Sundays.
