Casa José review: our verdict
Here, you order tapas from the sea first and wait for the paella pan. Casa José's menu leans towards a Spanish tavern: sizzling pil-pil prawns in spicy oil, deep-fried calamari in large rings, paprika-grilled octopus, whole shrimp on a bed of salad, followed by seafood paella served in its own dish. On the drink side, there is a cellar of Spanish wines and house cocktails.
The room and terrace are alive from midday until late at night, on Oued El Makhazine street, in the heart of Guéliz: a dinner with friends that drags on, a group wanting to share plates and clink glasses. The service, however, changes from one evening to another, attentive with some servers, distracted with others. It is not the table for an alcohol-free meal, the bodega spirit wants wine to accompany everything, nor is it for a tight budget: the bill climbs quickly.
The dish to order: the seafood paella to share, with a plate of fried calamari. The trap: coming in a hurry, the wait can stretch when the room is full, and it is better to reread the bill before paying. The good slot: open every day from midday to 1 am, ideal for a late dinner after a film in Guéliz.
