Café Baba review: our verdict
Political figures and legendary artists have passed through this café on Zaitouni Street, and the place still holds that aura: a timeless room, mint tea served without ceremony, and a sea view that alone justifies the climb up into the medina.
What you find there today depends heavily on the day. Some leave won over by a kind owner and a tranquil atmosphere, returning several times; others encounter an inattentive welcome, the owner glued to his phone, and leave with the feeling that the café has lost its former glory. It is a pilgrimage for lovers of Tangier's history and sea-facing tea, not a comfortable tea salon where one can settle in for the afternoon.
The good tip: order a mint tea and sit facing the sea, the very reason for the place's existence. The pitfall: come with children or non-smokers, as smoking is prevalent here, even at neighboring tables.
