Jardin de la Ménara review: our verdict
The photo everyone knows: the pavilion with its green-tiled roof perched by the edge of the large basin, and behind it, the snow-capped peaks of the Atlas in winter. La Ménara is first and foremost this still water that reflects everything, at the end of an alleyway that crosses an immense olive grove, the whole ensemble inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list along with the medina.
People come here for a calm walk west of the city, as a family, in a couple, or at the end of a carriage ride. Access to the garden is free, only the small pavilion is visited with a ticket. There is nothing else to do but walk, sit on a bench under the olive trees and gaze at the basin: not for those expecting a flowered garden, games or attractions.
The best time slot: in the morning from 8 am, before the heat, when the Atlas stands out behind the pavilion. The trap: coming in the middle of the summer without a cap. The good tip: extend the walk in the park across the way, which is more green.
