Our review
Rue Ahl Fès, just a few alleys away from the Medersa Ben Youssef, the Maison de la Photographie opened in 2009 in a riad within the medina. The walls display images of Morocco taken between 1879 and 1960: portraits, landscapes, scenes of Berber life, as well as glass plates, postcards, and a dedicated room for autochromes, these very first colour photographs. A documentary on the Berber world completes the tour.
The visit is peaceful, far from the noise of the souks, and the final set of steps leads to the real reward: a terrace with views over the medina rooftops and the Atlas peaks, where a small café serves mint tea and snacks without breaking the bank. Perfect for history buffs, photography enthusiasts, or a break between exploring the neighbourhood.
Know this: you'll quickly go through it, often in under an hour, which can make the ticket feel a bit pricey; it's paired with the Mouassine Music Museum, making it worthwhile. Take your time on the terrace—that's what people remember.
