Sama Rooftop review: our verdict
The minaret stands just opposite, only 400 meters away as the crow flies, which is precisely why we climb up. Sama, meaning "sky" in Arabic, has occupied the roof of Diaffa since 2026, featuring green-and-white striped banquettes, brass, garlands, a neon flamingo, and a mirrored wall that reflects the Koutoubia during the blue hour. Behind it all stands the Rmili family, who have run Diaffa since 1994 and La Rotisserie de la Paix since 1946.
The menu leans into the extended aperitif: house cocktails and plates to share, such as medjool dates stuffed with prawns and knafa. In the early evening, the atmosphere is gentle with soft music and room for conversation; later, DJs take over until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. This is the perfect spot for a first drink upon arriving in Marrakech, a birthday celebration with friends, or a private event accommodating up to 140 seated guests, though it is not suitable for a quiet tête-à-tête on a Saturday night.
The ideal time to arrive is one hour before sunset, as the tables facing the minaret get the first view. The dish to order is the medjool dates stuffed with fresh goat cheese and grilled almonds, 80 DH (menu updated in 2026). The trap to avoid: coming on a Tuesday, which is a closed day.
