Chez Simo l'Italien review: our verdict
Impossible to miss: an earthenware dome oven placed at the entrance on Mohammed el Beqal Street, with wood stacked beneath it, illuminated in violet as night falls. It is what gives Chez Simo its reputation: thin, well-crafted dough, quick cooking over wood fire, and generous toppings, ranging from seafood to minced meat, all at reasonable prices. The menu also includes pasta with cream and a sweet banana-chocolate calzone.
The room is understated, with benches, grey armchairs, and a television, remaining calm on weekdays. It is a spot for a no-frills pizza with friends or a couple, when you are looking for the best balance between dough quality and price. Not suitable for a dinner where hospitality matters: service can be distracted, and the room's decor has sometimes left something to be desired.
The dish to order: a thin-crust pizza fresh from the wood-fired oven. The trap: it is closed on Sundays. The tip: bring cash, as credit cards have not always been accepted.
