Our review
Rue Riad Zitoun Kedim, in the heart of the medina, Dar Essalam has welcomed guests since 1952 in a residence where some parts date back to the 17th century. You sit down in one of the salons, each with its own character: dome and fountain in the Royal Salon, wood, copper, and zellige in the Marjane Salon, and intricately decorated walls and ceilings in the Bahja Salon. Hitchcock even filmed scenes of L'Homme qui en savait trop here. On the plate, the classics are served well: fragrant tajines, royal or vegetarian couscous, and mechoui.
At night, the house turns into a party. The musicians raise the atmosphere as the meal progresses, the dancers move between the tables and lead the crowd. The teams are warm and attentive, and know how to welcome families with children just as well as groups of friends or large gatherings. Before leaving, you climb to the third-floor terrace, open to the rooftops of the medina and the Koutoubia.
Know this: to enjoy the show, it's better to arrive around 8 pm and book, especially for the main salon. Those who prefer calm will come at noon, when the salons are cool and service is quick. In either case, portions are generous and the value for money holds up.
