Le Coin du Bois (The Wood Corner) review: our verdict
Everything is written in chalk on the slate board placed in front of the door: grilled sardines, smelt, sea bream or swordfish, stuffed squid, sautéed prawns, seafood tajine, and sardine balls. The fish comes from the nearby market, and you can tell: grilled sole topped with herbs, lemon prawns, whole sea bream marked by the grill.
The room is small and full of character: a hand-painted sign, yellow pendant lights, plants hanging from the ceiling, and benches and floor made of broken ceramic mosaic. The service is friendly and the atmosphere relaxed. This is the spot for a lunch between two strolls in the Mellah, for a couple or with friends; not for a large party due to lack of space, nor for a gourmet dinner.
The dish to order: a grilled fish chosen from the slate, depending on the market's catch. The good tip: reasonable prices for the medina of Essaouira. Note: closed on Wednesdays, open from 11 am to 11 pm on other days.
