Restaurant Dar Hatim review: our verdict
The name means "Hatim's house," and that is exactly the feeling you get upon stepping through the door: you are dining at someone's home rather than in a restaurant. The cuisine is Fassi and homestyle, served in generous portions that leave no one hungry, from the starter to the mint tea. The pastilla comes straight from the house kitchen, and the desserts revolve around almond paste.
This is the place to go for your first real meal in Fès, whether as a couple or with family, when you prefer home cooking over menus designed for tourist buses. The traditional decor remains understated, the dining room is impeccable, and the hosts, Karima and Fouad, stop by to ask if everything is to your liking. This is not a spot for a rushed lunch between monuments: the pace is slow, and you must be prepared to walk a bit through the alleyways of Fès El Bali, derb Zaouia, to find the entrance.
The catch: arrive without a train or guide to catch, as the attentive service is not quick. The house serves every day from 11 am to 11:30 pm, which leaves the choice between a long lunch and a late dinner after exploring the medina.
