Le Palazzo review: our verdict
In Essaouira, you ascend to the Palazzo for its Rooftop: a terrace that embraces the ramparts, the roofs of the medina, and the ocean, where you can enjoy a drink while watching the sun set. Below, a nineteenth-century residence, long known as Palazzo Desdemona, aligns twelve rooms and suites around two patios, featuring a decor that dares to embrace mustard yellow, bottle green, and patterned tiles.
On the side of hospitality, the house plays the card of a attentive small hotel: luggage handled in the medina, impeccable rooms, and a breakfast composed to your taste. It is the address for a weekend for two or an aperitif with friends after a day of festival. For dinner, it is more uneven: the Fish Bar, in the hall, focuses on the sea, but the plates do not always match the level of the glasses. Not for those looking for a great table.
The glass to order: a cocktail on the roof, at sunset. The trap: climbing up on a windy evening without having reserved, as the good spots go quickly and the terrace cools down all at once. The right slot: late afternoon, when the light passes over the ramparts.
