Ukiyo review: our verdict
A library, a meticulously crafted design, and Japanese dishes served in tranquility: Ukiyo is as much a reading room as it is a cafeteria. The name evokes the "floating world" of Japanese woodblock prints, and the atmosphere follows suit—relaxed and far removed from the noise of Casablanca. It's an address that some regulars eventually get delivered to their homes every week.
The lunch formula is the perfect entry point: affordable, well-served, with a smiling team that takes the time to explain. You can dine alone with a book or a laptop, or share a meal with a friend without raising your voice. The dishes are good without being overwhelming, and that's precisely why you should aim for the formula: à la carte, the gap between price and portion is debatable. This isn't the spot for a gourmet Japanese dinner or a large, noisy gathering. During Ramadan, the house signed up for a fixed ftour menu that subverted the classics, featuring matcha chebakia and stuffed dates.
The best time slot: lunch, for the midday formula. The trap: ordering à la carte while hoping for the formula price. The best tip: keep an eye out for the Ramadan ftour menu, the house's most creative moment.
